Wireless Phone and Emergency Preparedness

Top 10 wireless phone tips for
Emergencies
Here are the Top 10 wireless phone tips to help ensure you are
prepared in case of a disaster or an emergency.
1. Make sure that your family, friends and co-workers have your
wireless phone number and that you have theirs.
2. Always have your wireless phone with you. In an emergency,
it's a good idea to keep your phone turned on. Even if you're unable
to get through to anyone - someone may be able to get through to you.
3. Activate the "Emergency 9-1-1" speed-dial button on your
phone. Typically if this feature is available on your phone it is the
"9" button. Refer to your user manual for directions on how to
activate this feature.
4. For quick access, preprogram your phone with numbers for
emergency services, family and friends.
5. Carry an extra battery. Ensure that the batteries for your
wireless phone are fully charged and alternate between them to verify
they are in good working order. Most phones have an icon on the screen
that indicate how much battery life you have left. Have a battery
charger handy at all times. Also consider getting a vehicle power
adapter for your wireless phone. In a disaster, a car adapter could be
the best opportunity to power a wireless phone battery.
6. Many wireless phones now provide data and Internet services
as alternative ways to get timely information and stay in touch. Many
offer access to the latest weather, traffic and other vital
information. With an Internet phone you can also send messages to
standard email addresses. It's a good idea to store these addresses in
your phone for quick recall.
7. Currently, AT&T Wireless customers who don't have wireless
data services, can rely on voice recognition software, when in the
AT&T Wireless network, to check the status of airports nationwide and
hear the new national airport security policies via AT&T Wireless #121
service. Simply dial "#121" from your wireless phone and follow the
voice prompts to receive the latest airport status information.
8. If available on your phone, familiarize yourself with
two-way text messaging and use this as another means of communication.
You may be able to get through this way even if voice and email
messages don't work.
9. If you are in a large-scale emergency, limit use of wireless
phones to only necessary calls to ensure phone line availability for
rescue workers.
10. Know your wireless phone - carefully read your instruction
guide and practice using all the features. If you need additional
help, please visit AT & T Wireless,
an AT&T Wireless store or call customer care at 1 800 888-7600.
